Pakistan Dominates Australia in T20 Finale

Date:

Saim Ayub and Babar Azam both achieved half-centuries, while Mohammad Nawaz secured five wickets, leading Pakistan to a decisive 111-run victory over Australia in the T20 series finale on Sunday. Ayub’s 56 off 37 balls and Azam’s unbeaten 50 propelled Pakistan to a total of 207-6, with Nawaz’s remarkable bowling performance of 5-18 restricting Australia to a mere 96 in Lahore.

This victory marked Pakistan’s third T20 whitewash over Australia, following previous successes in 2010 and 2018, setting a positive tone as they gear up for the upcoming T20 World Cup set to commence on February 7, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

Australia faced early setbacks as skipper Mitchell Marsh was dismissed for just one run by Shaheen Shah Afridi. Nawaz further dismantled the Australian batting lineup, taking crucial wickets including opener Matthew Short, Cameron Green, and Marcus Stoinis. Shaheen Shah Afridi also contributed with two wickets, leaving Australia struggling at 63-5.

Nawaz continued his impressive form by claiming two more wickets, dismissing Josh Philippe and Cooper Connolly, surpassing his previous best T20I figures achieved against Afghanistan last year.

Pakistan, who opted to bat after winning the toss for the third consecutive time, saw Ayub and Azam leading the charge after the early dismissals of Fakhar Zaman and Salman Agha. The duo’s partnership of 69 runs off 45 balls stabilized the innings. Ayub showcased his prowess with two sixes and six fours, securing his sixth T20I fifty, while Azam’s innings featured a six and three fours.

Shadab Khan’s explosive 46 off 19 balls, including five sixes and two fours, provided a late surge for Pakistan as he combined with Azam to add 57 runs in just 28 deliveries. The team amassed 70 runs in the final five overs, setting a formidable target for Australia.
