Pakistan was gearing up for historic discussions between Iran and the US to bring an end to the ongoing war, despite ceasefire breaches posing a threat to peace in the Middle East and beyond.
While tensions persisted in the US-Iran ceasefire, with Israel’s continuous attacks on Lebanon and disagreements over negotiation terms, Pakistani authorities affirmed that the crucial peace talks would proceed as scheduled over the weekend.
The conflict, initiated by strikes from Israel and the US on Iran on February 28, has resulted in a high death toll and severe global economic repercussions. Iran’s blockade of the vital shipping passage, the Strait of Hormuz, has led to a worldwide shortage of oil and gas, sparking an unprecedented energy crisis.
Iran had set conditions for talks with the US, including a ceasefire in Lebanon and the release of blocked assets. President Trump mentioned that Iran’s leverage in the negotiations is primarily its control over the critical strait.
Vice President JD Vance, leading the US delegation, expressed optimism for a positive outcome but warned of a tough stance if Iran attempted to manipulate the negotiations. The ceasefire has temporarily halted US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran but has not resolved the strait blockade.
Trump criticized Iran for impeding oil flow through the strait and cautioned against unauthorized fees collection from passing ships. He also indicated readiness to resume military action if negotiations in Pakistan failed to yield results.
Israel launched a major offensive shortly after the ceasefire announcement, causing significant casualties in Lebanon. Rocket fire from Lebanon prompted air raid alerts in Israel, with plans for separate talks between Israel and Lebanon to end the conflict and disarm Hezbollah.
As preparations progressed for the US-Iran peace talks in Pakistan, both countries’ advance teams were stationed at a central hotel in Islamabad. Security measures were tightened in the city, with the area around the hotel designated as a restricted zone.
The war did not achieve Trump’s initial objectives of neutralizing Iran’s military capabilities and nuclear program. Iran retains missile and drone capabilities, enriched uranium, and stable governance despite internal upheavals.
Iran’s negotiation agenda includes demands for economic sanctions relief and recognition of authority over the strait to control transit and access. The US seeks Iran’s disarmament, cessation of enrichment activities, and withdrawal of support for regional allies.
Preparations for the talks were shrouded in secrecy due to security concerns, with Iranian Revolutionary Guard officials expected to join the Iranian delegation. Delegations from Gulf nations impacted by Iranian attacks, such as Qatar and Saudi Arabia, may also participate in sideline discussions at the Islamabad talks.
