Pope Leo expressed concern during a gathering in Angola yesterday about the widespread exploitation of individuals by authoritative figures and the deception carried out by the wealthy. This remarks reflect his increasingly assertive speaking style during his ongoing visit to Africa, which spans four countries.
As the first American pope, he has faced criticism from President Donald Trump for his candid remarks. Addressing worshippers at a Mass near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo in Saurimo, Leo emphasized that violence and oppression contradict the teachings of Christianity.
“Every instance of oppression, violence, exploitation, and dishonesty undermines the essence of Christ’s resurrection,” stated the pontiff, referencing the fundamental Christian belief in Jesus’ resurrection.
Leo’s trip to Angola constitutes the third segment of an extensive 10-day African tour, which is one of the most elaborate papal visits ever undertaken. This journey includes visits to 11 cities and towns across four nations, covering a total distance of nearly 18,000 km through 18 flights.
Since assuming leadership of the 1.4 billion-member Catholic Church in May, Pope Leo initially maintained a relatively low profile. However, during his African tour, he has delivered robust condemnations of warfare and inequality. While not directly naming any specific leaders, he has consistently criticized global figures.
During his visit, the 70-year-old pontiff condemned the exploitation of Africa’s natural resources by oppressive rulers and tyrants. He also remarked that a few tyrants were causing significant harm to the world. Pope Leo clarified to reporters that his speeches during the tour were prepared weeks in advance and were not specifically directed at President Trump.
