Three individuals were apprehended by the police at Dhanmondi-32, the residence of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, this afternoon while accompanying Dhaka University sociology professor AKM Jamal Uddin to offer flower tributes.
Earlier today, Professor Jamal took to Facebook to announce his plan to visit the Bangabandhu residence at 4:00 pm to show his respect, encouraging others to join him. In his post, he stated, “I will be at the historic residence of the Father of the Nation in Dhanmondi-32 to express my sorrow and admiration at 4 pm today. I urge everyone to come in groups.”
Later in the day, Professor Jamal and his companions arrived at Dhanmondi-32, where they were stopped by the police. A video shared on social media depicted the police escorting Jamal and the others forcefully into a vehicle.
Upon inquiry, Dhanmondi Zone Additional Deputy Commissioner Zisanul Haque clarified, “No educators were detained. They were relocated to ensure their safety from a volatile crowd and were subsequently released.”
Nonetheless, three other individuals were taken into custody, self-identifying as members of a proscribed organization, he further mentioned.
