A highly anticipated book unveiling the intriguing narratives behind some of Bangladesh’s most iconic films and contemporary songs penned by the renowned lyricist Gazi Mazharul Anwar is set for launch at the Amar Ekushey Boi Mela, as confirmed by publishers.
The upcoming release, titled “Alpo Kothar Golpo Gaan,” delves into the creative genesis of specific lyrics crafted by Anwar, whose repertoire boasts over 20,000 compositions spanning various genres including film, patriotic, and modern Bangla music. Apart from his prowess in songwriting, Anwar carved a significant legacy as a filmmaker, producer, and composer, leaving an indelible mark on Bangladesh’s cultural landscape for decades.
Published by the Dhaka-based Bhashachitra publishing house under the guidance of Khandokar Monirul Islam, the book marks the sixth installment in a series compiling Anwar’s insightful writings and perspectives on music and cinema.
The volume intricately examines the post-independence metamorphosis of Bangladesh’s film industry through the lens of song creation, spotlighting collaborations with leading vocalists, composers, music directors, filmmakers, and technicians of the era. Additionally, the book features personal anecdotes from various phases of the lyricist’s life, providing a glimpse into the societal milieu influencing his artistic endeavors.
Anwar’s son, Sarfaraz Anwar Upol, emphasized that the book serves a dual purpose of preservation and documentation.
“In honoring my late father, this publication immortalizes his musical legacy,” he stated. “Moreover, it aims to unveil the untold tales behind numerous beloved tracks to the readers. Over the years, a new volume has been unveiled around his birthday, and this latest offering will be unveiled during the book festival.”
Anwar, who passed away on September 4, 2022, continues to be a seminal figure in Bangladeshi music and cinema. His lyrical masterpieces, ranging from patriotic hymns to cinematic soundtracks and contemporary tunes, resonate widely across diverse generations of music enthusiasts.
