A rice trader was viciously attacked and killed in his own store by unidentified assailants in the Trishal upazila of Mymensingh on Monday night. The victim, Susen Chandra Sarker, aged 62 and a resident of Southkanda village in Trishal, was targeted at his shop, known as “Messrs Bhai Bhai Enterprise,” situated at Bogar Bazar Chowrasta in Trishal.

According to Md Abdullah Al Mamun, an additional superintendent of police (Administration and Finance) in Mymensingh, the attackers assaulted Susen with sharp weapons on his head and face before stealing cash from the store and fleeing the scene around 11:00 pm. Upon discovery by family members, Susen was found in a critical condition and rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by medical professionals. The body was subsequently taken to the MMCH morgue for a postmortem examination.

An investigation has been initiated by the police into the tragic killing. The son of the victim, Sujan Sarker, expressed shock at the incident, stating that there were no known conflicts with anyone. He called for justice and severe punishment for the perpetrators.

As of the latest update at 5:00 pm, no arrests have been made, and a formal complaint has not been lodged by the authorities. The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council has strongly denounced the attack and demanded swift action from the government to arrest the culprits and ensure justice.

The council highlighted the rising communal tensions leading up to the national election and emphasized that such violence against minority groups exacerbates feelings of insecurity. The statement issued by the council underscored the need for concrete measures from governmental bodies and law enforcement to protect the lives, assets, and dignity of minority communities, expressing concerns about the potential impact on the upcoming elections.
