Chennai Super Kings secured an eight-wicket victory over Delhi Capitals in the IPL match on Tuesday, thanks to disciplined bowling and an impressive unbeaten 87-run innings by opener Sanju Samson. Delhi, batting first, struggled on a challenging pitch and managed to post 155-7 after a shaky start at 69-5.
Chennai faced some early setbacks in their chase but Samson’s masterful 52-ball knock, supported by Kartik Sharma’s 41 runs, guided them to victory with 15 balls to spare. The partnership of 114 runs between Samson and Sharma sealed Chennai’s fifth win in 10 matches, placing them sixth in the league standings.
Chennai skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad praised Samson’s performance, highlighting the importance of both batting and bowling in winning tournaments. Delhi’s playoff hopes took a blow with their sixth defeat, emphasizing the importance of avoiding mistakes in the remaining matches to secure a spot in the top four and advance to the playoffs.
Samson’s exceptional form, including two centuries in the season, has been a standout feature. He reached his fifty in 32 balls and ended with seven fours and six sixes, accumulating a total of 402 runs in 10 matches. Despite South Africa’s Lungi Ngidi returning for Delhi and taking 1-30, it was Chennai’s bowlers, particularly Noor Ahmad and Akeal Hosein, who excelled in exploiting the pitch conditions.
Delhi’s Tristan Stubbs and Sameer Rizvi provided some resistance with their contributions, but it was not enough to challenge Chennai’s strong batting lineup. With veteran M.S. Dhoni yet to make an appearance due to injury, Chennai remains hopeful for his return as they aim to continue their successful campaign in the tournament.
