Surayya Akhtar Jahan has been appointed as the new administrator of the Dhaka North City Corporation, replacing Mohammad Azaz whose one-year contract was not renewed by the government.
The appointment of Surayya, an additional secretary at the Local Government Division, was announced through a gazette notification signed by Mahbuba Irene, a joint secretary at the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives.
Mohammad Azaz had been serving in the position on a full-time basis since February 9 last year for a one-year term. According to Md Alamgir Hossain, the public relations officer of the ministry, Azaz is not being removed but will be relieved of his duties at the end of his tenure.
Surayya is expected to take over the role on February 11.
Azaz, who is also the chairman of the River and Delta Research Centre, has come under scrutiny recently due to allegations of corruption. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) initiated an inquiry against him in November last year for alleged abuse of power, irregularities, corruption, and bribery.
While the ACC had summoned Azaz for questioning at its headquarters on January 29, he did not appear. Following a petition by the commission, a court imposed a travel ban on Azaz on February 1.
