Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi received a strong endorsement from US President Donald Trump just before the upcoming snap elections, where her coalition is predicted to achieve a significant victory. Takaichi, Japan’s first female prime minister, aims to leverage her popularity since assuming leadership of the second-largest economy in Asia in October.
Trump expressed his admiration for Takaichi’s leadership qualities and love for her country on the Truth Social platform, announcing her upcoming visit to the United States on March 19. The two countries are working towards a substantial trade agreement and collaborating on national security, with Trump offering his full support to Takaichi and her coalition.
In a departure from the norm of US presidents refraining from endorsing foreign candidates, Trump has openly backed Takaichi, highlighting her accomplishments. Takaichi, aged 64, made efforts to welcome Trump to Japan shortly after taking office, endorsing him for the Nobel Peace Prize and presenting him with golf-related gifts.
While trade negotiations have seen progress, particularly with reduced tariffs on Japanese goods in exchange for investment commitments, Trump has not publicly commented on Takaichi’s stance on China regarding Taiwan. Polls indicate a decisive victory for Takaichi in the upcoming elections, with her revitalizing the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and garnering support across different demographics.
Market concerns have arisen due to Takaichi’s economic stimulus plans and tax reduction promises, impacting Japanese government bond yields and the yen’s value. Despite these worries, experts like Abhijit Surya from Capital Economics remain optimistic that fiscal discipline will be maintained to prevent any reckless spending.
