President Donald Trump increased the global import tax rate for goods entering the United States to 15 percent yesterday, reiterating his commitment to upholding his aggressive tariff strategy following a recent Supreme Court ruling that deemed a significant portion of it unlawful.
In a statement on his Truth Social platform, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the court’s decision and announced the administration’s decision to raise import tariffs to the permissible and legally tested level of 15 percent. This move comes after an initial imposition of a 10 percent duty in response to the Supreme Court ruling.
Additionally, Trump declared that in the coming months, his administration would explore alternative methods to levy tariffs within legal boundaries.
This recent development marks a continuation of the fluctuating tariff adjustments that have characterized Trump’s trade policy over the past year, with multiple tariff levels established and subsequently modified or rescinded by his administration.
The decision to increase import tariffs appears to be an effort to work around the Supreme Court’s ruling, which delivered a stern rebuke of the President’s broad and often capricious tariff actions, a cornerstone of his international trade approach.
The elevated duty is temporary under the law, permitted for a duration of 150 days. Certain sectors, such as pharmaceuticals, and goods traded under the US-Mexico-Canada agreement, are exempt from the new tariff, as outlined in a White House document.
Throughout the past year, Trump has utilized varying tariff rates as tools to incentivize or penalize countries, irrespective of their diplomatic relations with the United States.
Furthermore, the White House confirmed that countries that had negotiated separate tariff agreements with the Trump administration would also be subject to the new global import tax.
Following the Supreme Court’s ruling that the 1977 law Trump had invoked to impose abrupt tariffs on specific countries did not grant him that authority, the President criticized the court’s decision, alleging foreign influences without substantiating his claims.
Expressing disappointment in the justices who ruled against him, Trump accused them of lacking the fortitude to act in the best interests of the country, as he addressed reporters.
