US President Donald Trump is scheduled to visit China for a crucial meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping from March 31 to April 2. This announcement comes as the Supreme Court invalidated a significant portion of Trump’s imposed tariffs on imported goods.
A White House official confirmed the upcoming trip just before the Supreme Court’s ruling, which dealt a blow to Trump’s trade policies, particularly targeting China. The meeting between Trump and Xi was anticipated to focus on extending a trade truce between the two nations, halting further tariff escalations.
The recent Supreme Court decision has added complexity to the already strained US-China relations, which had shown signs of improvement following Trump’s reduction of tariffs on Chinese products. This reduction was part of an agreement where China agreed to combat illicit fentanyl trafficking and temporarily ease restrictions on vital minerals exports.
The invalidated tariffs, which were set at 20% on Chinese exports to the US, were implemented under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). The court ruled that Trump had exceeded his authority in invoking these tariffs based on national emergencies related to fentanyl and trade imbalances.
Despite this setback, other tariffs on Chinese imports, established under Section 301 and Section 232 trade laws, remain effective. The specifics of the tariffs that Trump may reinstate are yet to be determined, but he mentioned a plan to introduce a new 10% global tariff for 150 days during a press conference.
