“Uncertainty Surrounds Oath-Taking of Jamaat Alliance MPs”

Date:

Uncertainty looms regarding the inauguration of newly elected parliamentarians from the Jamaat-led 11-party coalition as BNP legislators have declined to be sworn in as members of the Constitutional Reform Council.

The MPs from the Jamaat alliance were slated to take their oaths this afternoon, but it remains uncertain if they will proceed with the swearing-in ceremony.

Ahsanul Mahboob Zubair, Assistant Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and head of its media and publicity division, disclosed that the alliance’s top officials are currently in a meeting at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban to deliberate on this matter.

Present at the meeting are Jamaat Ameer Shafiqur Rahman, Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, and other prominent leaders of the 11-party electoral coalition.

Zubair mentioned, “The final decision will be made during this meeting, and the media will be duly informed whether they choose to take the oath or not.”

Previously, BNP’s newly elected lawmakers were sworn in as parliament members but refrained from taking the oath as Constitutional Reform Council members. BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed clarified the party’s stance, stating, “None of us were elected to the Constitutional Reform Council. If the matter is constitutionally sanctioned in parliament, appropriate steps can be taken.”

The BNP’s position has caused confusion regarding whether the elected MPs from the Jamaat-led alliance will proceed with the oath-taking. Zubair indicated ongoing discussions, considering BNP’s decision to abstain from being sworn in to the Constitutional Reform Council.

“Given BNP’s stance on not taking the oath for the Constitutional Reform Council, deliberations are underway to determine their course of action. A final decision has not been reached yet,” he added.

Despite the scheduled oath-taking time at 12:00 pm, the meeting of the Jamaat-led alliance leaders was still ongoing at the time of this report.
