“US and Iran Hold Indirect Talks in Geneva Amid Nuclear Dispute”

Date:

The United States and Iran are engaging in indirect talks in Geneva today to address their longstanding nuclear dispute. There is uncertainty regarding the possibility of reaching a compromise as the US deploys military forces in the region.

US representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are involved in the negotiations, facilitated by Oman, according to a source familiar with the situation. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is also participating in the discussions.

Meanwhile, the US military is making preparations for potential operations against Iran in the coming weeks if President Donald Trump gives the order, as confirmed by two US officials. Iran, on the other hand, initiated a military exercise in the vital international waterway of the Strait of Hormuz, an essential oil export route for Gulf Arab states advocating for diplomatic resolution.

The nuclear talks between Iran and the US are overshadowed by ongoing protests and the specter of conflict. These negotiations, which commenced on February 6, aim to address the protracted disagreement between Tehran and Washington. The US and its ally Israel are concerned about Iran’s nuclear ambitions, fearing a threat to Israel’s security. In contrast, Iran asserts that its nuclear program is peaceful, although it has enriched uranium to levels beyond what is necessary for energy purposes, approaching weapons-grade levels.

Iran recalls a previous attempt to revive talks last June, which was disrupted by military actions initiated by Israel and subsequently supported by the US against Iranian nuclear facilities. Following these events, Iran announced a suspension of uranium enrichment activities. The Iranian government has faced internal challenges, including significant protests, partly fueled by economic hardships exacerbated by international sanctions limiting Iran’s oil revenue.

In a strategic move, the US has deployed a significant naval presence in the region, signaling its commitment to the negotiations. The US aims to broaden the discussion beyond nuclear issues to include Iran’s missile arsenal. However, Iran insists on focusing solely on nuclear-related matters, seeking sanctions relief in exchange for limitations on its nuclear program, while maintaining its stance on uranium enrichment and missile development.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed the challenges of reaching an agreement with Iran during a press briefing in Budapest. Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi met with Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, in Geneva to discuss collaboration with the agency and technical aspects related to the upcoming talks with the US.

Later today, Witkoff and Kushner are expected to engage in trilateral discussions involving Russia and Ukraine, as part of US efforts to mediate an agreement to end Russia’s prolonged invasion of Ukraine.
