The United States has recently given the green light for significant arms deals with both Israel and Saudi Arabia amid heightened tensions involving Iran.
The State Department has approved a sizable $3.8 billion sale of 30 Apache attack helicopters to Israel, following the country’s acceptance of a delicate ceasefire arrangement in Gaza. This move aims to bolster Israel’s self-defense capabilities, aligning with US interests in supporting the security of the nation.
Included in the approved package is a $1.8 billion deal for joint light tactical vehicles. The US regularly provides military aid to Israel, with this sale being a part of ongoing support efforts.
In a separate decision, the State Department has authorized a $9 billion sale of 730 Patriot missiles to Saudi Arabia, intended for defensive purposes against potential threats.
Tensions have been escalating in the region, particularly as the US positions a substantial military presence near Iran. Last year, Israel conducted significant airstrikes targeting various military sites in Iran, reflecting the ongoing complexities in the Middle East.
Iran has been under increasing scrutiny following widespread protests against the ruling regime, resulting in a violent crackdown on dissent. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has expressed reservations about engaging in military actions against Iran, citing concerns about potential repercussions on regional stability.
Although Saudi Arabia has been contemplating establishing normalized relations with Israel, recent military actions in Palestinian territories have strained this possibility. The Trump administration has emphasized the current phase of the Gaza ceasefire, focusing on efforts to disarm Hamas.
A violent incident on October 7, 2023, initiated by Hamas, led to casualties on both sides. The AFP reports a total of 1,221 deaths, primarily civilians, on the Israeli side, including hostages who perished during captivity in Gaza. In response, Israel’s military campaign resulted in at least 71,667 Palestinian fatalities, according to Gaza’s health ministry.
