The United States is set to remove its entire contingent of 1,000 troops from Syria within the next two months, as per reports from US media outlets. This move comes as the Syrian government has expanded its control over the region and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, previously instrumental in combating Islamic State (IS), have committed to integrating into the state, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.
CBS, a television network, also corroborated the plan, citing anonymous US officials. The decision follows recent withdrawals of US forces from key bases in Syria, such as Al-Tanf and Al-Shadadi, utilized in the fight against IS by the US-led international coalition.
In the aftermath of Bashar al-Assad’s downfall in late 2024, Washington has forged closer ties with Syria’s new leadership, facilitating the transfer of numerous IS militants from prisons to secure facilities in Iraq.
