Some 100 US troops are set to be stationed in Nigeria as a part of an escalated military collaboration to combat insecurity in the West African nation, as per an announcement made by the Nigerian defense ministry on Monday.
The specific arrival dates of the “US military trainers” were not disclosed by the ministry.
In a statement, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) revealed the recent presence of approximately 100 United States military personnel and related equipment at Bauchi Airfield. This deployment was coordinated following a formal request from the Nigerian Federal Government to the US administration for assistance in structured military training, technical aid, and intelligence exchange with the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Nigeria is grappling with multiple security challenges including a prolonged jihadist insurgency in the northeast, clashes between farmers and herders in the north-central areas, separatist unrest in the southeast, and rampant abductions for ransom in the northwest.
US President Donald Trump has asserted that Christians in Nigeria are facing “persecution” and are targets of “genocide” carried out by “terrorists.” However, both Abuja and the majority of impartial analysts argue that the violence in Nigeria affects individuals of all religions, including both Christians and Muslims.
