Two alleged muggers were reportedly fatally assaulted by a group of villagers in Sadullapur upazila of Gaibandha in the early hours of yesterday.
The episode unfolded in the Mujahidpur vicinity of Khoddokomarpur village, as per authorities.
The individuals who lost their lives were identified as Lebu Mia, also known as Bhondol, aged 24, from Satarpara village, and Moinul Islam, aged 50, from Mostafapur village in Palashbari upazila, stated Sarowar Alam Khan, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Palashbari Police Station.
As per the accounts of police and bystanders, three muggers on a motorcycle waylaid a woman and her companion on the Sadullapur-Thutiapakur road at the Madarhat Kheya Ghat area after their arrival from Dhaka on a night coach at approximately 4:30 am.
Armed with sharp weapons, the suspects reportedly stole cash and gold ornaments from the victims.
“Upon hearing the victims’ cries for help, locals initiated a pursuit of the muggers. During their attempted escape, the suspects lost control of their motorcycle and crashed in the Mujahidpur region,” mentioned Bidroh Kumar Kundu, the additional superintendent of police (Gaibandha Circle).
“Two of them were apprehended and fatally assaulted on the spot by the villagers, while the third suspect managed to flee,” he further explained.
Relatives disclosed that Lebu Mia, the sole son of widow Phulmati Begum, had been employed as a rickshaw puller in Dhaka for three years. He resided there with his wife and one-year-old son and had returned to the village just two days prior to visit his mother.
The other deceased individual, Moinul Islam, had wed Lebu’s cousin as his second wife and was residing with his father-in-law in Satarpara.
Abdul Alim, OC of Sadullapur Police Station, informed that the police recovered the bodies and transferred them to the Gaibandha General Hospital morgue for postmortem examination. The motorcycle utilized by the suspects was confiscated.
Phulmati, Lebu Mia’s mother, lodged a murder case related to the incident, the OC added.
