Jamaat-e-Islami Leader Condemns Bangladesh Bank Events

Date:

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leader Shafiqur Rahman criticized the recent events at Bangladesh Bank, labeling it as the beginning of a government-endorsed mob culture. He expressed disappointment and disapproval of the situation, emphasizing that showing disrespect to esteemed individuals like the central bank’s governor and his advisor is unjustifiable.

In a statement shared on his verified Facebook page in the early hours of the morning, Shafiqur emphasized the unacceptability of such behavior within a crucial institution like Bangladesh Bank. He highlighted the precarious state of the country’s economy, attributing it to what he described as the influence of fascism, pervasive corruption, extortion, and syndicate activities at all levels. He cautioned that if these undesirable practices persist, especially at prominent institutions like Bangladesh Bank, it could lead to further deterioration of the economy.

The Jamaat leader called for a unified response against disorderly conduct, urging all segments of society, regardless of political affiliations, to stand against the harassment of competent and deserving officials in authoritative positions. He directed a message to the government, urging them to halt such actions immediately if they genuinely aim to establish a democratic and impartial Bangladesh.

Furthermore, Shafiqur advocated for appointments to key governmental roles based on merit rather than party allegiance, emphasizing the importance of appointing capable and patriotic individuals to pivotal positions.

Recent protests against Ahsan H Mansur, the former governor of Bangladesh Bank, culminated in the cancellation of his appointment, with Md Mostakur Rahman being appointed as his successor. Mostakur, a businessman and accountant, is the first individual from a business background to hold the position of governor in the country’s history.

Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar raised concerns about the appointment of the new governor, citing potential conflicts of interest and questioning the autonomy of the central bank. Porwar stressed the critical role of a central bank governor in ensuring monetary stability, regulating banks, and fostering public and international confidence in the economy. He criticized the appointment of an industrialist as governor, citing instances of loan rescheduling and party affiliations that could compromise institutional integrity.

Porwar underscored the importance of having qualified and experienced professionals lead independent institutions for Bangladesh to progress effectively.
