Bangladesh’s Shamit Shome Eyes Asian Football Recognition

Date:

Bangladesh’s midfielder Shamit Shome is optimistic about the national team’s chance to gain more recognition in Asian football as they gear up for upcoming matches against Vietnam and Singapore this month.

The team is set to wrap up their 2027 AFC Asian Cup qualifying campaign with a final Group C showdown against hosts Singapore on March 31 following a friendly match against Vietnam on March 26.

“We’re getting ready for the games by building on our progress from last year,” Shamit shared with the media after training at Bashundhara Kings Arena.

Shamit, who recently left Canadian club Cavalry FC, played a crucial role in Bangladesh’s historic victory over India in the qualifiers last November, ending a 22-year winless streak against their neighbors.

“Even in the India match, our coach highlighted areas for improvement despite the win. Our focus is on enhancing our performance from that game and implementing those strategies against Vietnam and Singapore.”

Although Bangladesh is no longer in contention for qualification, the team is aiming to showcase pride and development, with a potential second-place finish still within reach.

“It’s hard to predict, but we have room for improvement in all aspects. Winning matches requires a collective effort of defense and attack. We understand the importance of upcoming competitions, but our primary focus is on one game at a time – first Vietnam, then Singapore, followed by the June window and eventually the SAFF tournament.”

“Our current objective is to play with pride.”

The friendly match against already qualified Vietnam is viewed as a significant challenge, testing both technical skills and mental strength.

“People already recognize Bangladesh’s progress. However, achieving positive results in these matches will earn us even more respect from our opponents.”

Regarding his future plans, Shamit is keeping his options open after departing from his club, emphasizing his immediate commitment to the upcoming matches.

“I’m exploring various opportunities to determine what’s best for my career and playing for Bangladesh. Let’s see how things unfold. Right now, my focus is on performing well in these two matches.”

Having participated in four games for Bangladesh to date, the midfielder expressed his satisfaction with his experience with the national team, exceeding his initial expectations.

“It has been a fantastic journey so far, surpassing my expectations. I am thoroughly enjoying playing with the team – great teammates, good coaches, and excellent treatment from BFF. I am delighted and eager to continue improving.”

Shamit highlighted the ongoing training camp as his lengthiest continuous period with the squad, believing that it will enhance team chemistry ahead of the upcoming matches.

“It’s a significant advantage to have joined the team earlier this time, training together, and working closely with the coach. This extended period with the squad is unprecedented for me. Usually, I only have a day before a match. This opportunity allows me to build better chemistry and understanding, which I hope will reflect positively on the field against Vietnam and Singapore.”
