“Thailand’s Election: Reformists vs. Conservatives in Border Dispute”

Date:

Voting commenced on Sunday in Thailand for a general election that pits reformists against conservatives, with the looming presence of former leader Thaksin Shinawatra, currently in prison. The country’s next government will need to address a long-standing border dispute with Cambodia that led to deadly conflicts last year.

The first voter, Yuernyong Loonboot, emphasized the need for a strong leader to safeguard sovereignty due to the border conflict causing anxiety among residents. Economic growth is sluggish, with the tourism sector struggling to recover from the impact of Covid-19, while transnational cybercrime networks operate across borders.

No party is expected to secure a majority, leading to anticipated coalition talks post-election. Political scientist Thitinan Pongsudhirak noted that influential forces in Thailand extend beyond the political realm, emphasizing the significance of post-election outcomes.

The previous leading progressive party, Move Forward, secured the most seats in the previous election but faced obstacles in forming a government. Thaksin’s party, Pheu Thai, formed a coalition with conservatives in the past, facing challenges with leadership changes due to court orders.

Thailand has a history of political instability, including military coups and judicial interventions. The recent dissolution of Move Forward party raised concerns about political freedoms in the country.

The election campaign focuses on various populist policies and party agendas. Bhumjaithai leader, known for advocating cannabis legalization, is expected to compete for the premiership in alliance with Pheu Thai. The People’s Party aims to reduce military influence and end conscription.

While Pheu Thai remains popular in polls, internal issues have affected its standing. The referendum ballot also includes a question on constitutional reform without specific proposals.
