More than 100,000 individuals have fled Sudan’s troubled Kordofan region since October, according to the United Nations report on Tuesday, as conflicts intensify throughout the expansive southern area. Sudan has been gripped in a vicious conflict since April 2023, pitting the Sudanese military against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
This ongoing conflict has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands, with over 11 million displaced and causing what the United Nations terms as one of the most severe humanitarian crises globally. Data released by the UN’s International Organization for Migration (IOM) indicated that around 115,223 people were displaced from Kordofan between October 25 and February 5.
The upsurge in displacement followed more than 80 violent occurrences registered in North, South, and West Kordofan states, as highlighted by the UN agency. The mass departure from the southern region commenced after the RSF redirected its attention there, subsequent to seizing El-Fasher – the last stronghold of the Sudanese military in the nearby Darfur region – in October.
