A drone attack carried out by Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces resulted in the deaths of two children and injuries to 12 others in El-Rahad, a city in southern Kordofan, as reported by a medical source to AFP.
The Kordofan region has become a major battleground between the RSF and the regular army since April 2023.
Witnessing the incident, Ahmed Moussa reported seeing numerous students wounded by the strike that targeted a traditional Koranic school.
Situated on a crucial route connecting El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan, to the White Nile river, El-Rahad serves as a vital link for the army to reach Khartoum, the capital.
In February, the army regained control of the city as part of a swift offensive aimed at breaking a prolonged siege on El-Obeid, pushing westward in the process.
In their efforts to encircle El-Obeid again, the RSF has been conducting multiple drone strikes along the eastern highway, a route linking Darfur in the west to the rest of the country.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of casualties and forced approximately 11 million people to flee, leading to severe hunger and displacement crises on a global scale.
The war has divided the nation, with the army holding the north, center, and east regions, while the RSF and its allies control the west and sections of the south.
Despite facing setbacks after the RSF solidified its presence in Darfur, the army has shown signs of progress by breaking sieges in South Kordofan cities like Dilling and Kadugli in recent days.
These cities have become symbols of the violence in Kordofan, where hundreds of thousands are at risk of starvation due to daily drone attacks.
