“Bangladesh Football Federation Initiates Search for New National Team Coach”

Date:

The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) has commenced the search for a new national team coach, putting Javier Cabrera’s future in uncertainty. Following a crucial meeting of the National Teams Committee led by BFF President Tabith Awal, discussions centered on the team’s trajectory and Cabrera’s fate as his existing contract expires on April 30.

After the meeting, Amirul Islam Babu, a member of the National Teams Committee and Media Committee Chairman, disclosed that the federation has opted to consider fresh candidates for the coaching role. Babu stated that the selection process will involve interviews with potential candidates, including Cabrera if he chooses to participate, with the final decision resting with the committee.

Despite Cabrera being the longest-serving coach in Bangladesh’s history, having served for over four years, opinions on his tenure have been mixed. While there have been noticeable improvements in the team’s performance, results, especially in the Asian Cup qualifiers, have not met expectations, even with the addition of expatriate players.

To maintain a fair and competitive selection process, Babu clarified that previous considerations would not give Cabrera any advantage if he reapplies. The committee has decided to solicit applications locally and internationally, with CV submissions accepted through various avenues, including embassies. BFF aims to appoint a new head coach on a two-year contract, aligning with a strategic shift towards long-term planning.

In addition to the head coach position, the BFF is also seeking a goalkeeping coach on a two-year contract to provide stability in a role that has witnessed frequent changes in recent years. Plans to arrange matches during the FIFA international window from June 1 to June 9 are in motion, with Thailand and Myanmar identified as potential opponents, aiming for higher-level competition.

Looking ahead, the BFF is focusing on enhancing the football structure by establishing an Under-23 national team as part of its strategic vision. The Under-23 squad will undergo continuous training to potentially serve as a talent pool for the senior team, reflecting a commitment to player development and performance improvement.

With preparations underway for the upcoming FIFA window and the quest for a new coach in progress, Bangladesh football is at a pivotal juncture that could define the team’s trajectory in the foreseeable future.
