Iran’s Supreme Leader Orders Strait of Hormuz Closure

Date:

Iran’s recently appointed supreme leader has issued a directive to keep the crucial oil shipping route of the Strait of Hormuz closed, while US President Donald Trump emphasized the importance of halting what he referred to as the Islamic Republic’s “evil empire” over concerns about oil prices.

Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, reportedly injured in an airstrike, has not made a public appearance since being named supreme leader last Sunday. His resolute message, advocating for the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz and urging Gulf nations to shut down their US military bases, was relayed by a news presenter on state television.

Khamenei stressed the necessity of utilizing the leverage of blocking the Strait of Hormuz, a key global passage for oil and liquefied natural gas transport. He mentioned that Iran’s retaliatory actions against US and Israeli strikes were underway but emphasized that these efforts would remain a top priority until fully accomplished.

Following Iran’s renewed attacks on Gulf energy facilities, causing a temporary surge in oil prices above $100 per barrel, concerns were raised about a potential major disruption in global oil supply. Despite these developments, Trump downplayed these worries, focusing instead on preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and destabilizing the Middle East and beyond.

Recent reports depicted scenes of thick smoke rising from fuel tank strikes in Bahrain, drone-related damages in Kuwait and Dubai, and intercepted drone threats in Saudi Arabia. Shipping activities in the Strait of Hormuz have significantly slowed down, with additional vessel attacks reported in the waters off the coasts of the United Arab Emirates and Iraq.

Experts warned of an unprecedented supply disruption in the global oil market due to the ongoing conflict, leading to a substantial increase in benchmark oil prices. The situation has prompted Gulf states to reduce production, causing economic implications such as potential growth constraints and inflation concerns.

While a top Iranian military official hinted at the possibility of a prolonged conflict impacting the world economy, Trump indicated that the air campaign against Iran would not cease immediately. Analysts cautioned that underestimating the Iranian regime’s resolve could result in a protracted struggle against the US and Israel.

The escalating conflict has resulted in casualties and displacements across the region, with Lebanon and Iran bearing significant human and economic tolls. Tensions have intensified as Hezbollah’s threats against Israel were met with warnings of expanded attacks from the Israeli Defense Minister.

As the crisis unfolds, military actions and disruptions continue to escalate, with a focus on key strategic sites in Iran and the ongoing threat to the vital Strait of Hormuz. Despite efforts to alleviate oil market concerns through strategic reserve releases, the situation remains uncertain, propelling oil prices to unprecedented levels.

The conflict’s toll on human lives and economies is evident, with conflicting reports on casualties and financial costs. The spiraling events underscore the critical need for diplomatic resolutions to prevent further escalation and mitigate the far-reaching consequences of the ongoing crisis.
