“Bangladesh Cricket Board President Denounces ‘Constitutional Coup'”

Date:

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Aminul Islam Bulbul has criticized the National Sports Council’s (NSC) decision to dismantle the elected board and establish an ad hoc committee, labeling it as a “constitutional coup.” Bulbul firmly denied any wrongdoing during the October 6, 2025 elections, dismissing allegations of irregularities.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Bulbul dismissed the investigation report as flawed and lacking legal validity under the BCB constitution and laws. He asserted his position as the rightful President of the BCB, emphasizing that his status remains unchanged until the matter is resolved by the High Court.

Bulbul refuted accusations of corruption, manipulation, or misuse of authority in the election process, emphasizing that the elections were conducted transparently by a three-member election commission established on September 6, 2025. The commission consisted of Supreme Court advocate Mohammod Hossain as the chief election commissioner, CID chief Sibgat Ullah as a commissioner, and the NSC executive director as another commissioner.

Addressing concerns raised regarding certain clubs and the councillorship of Tamim Iqbal, Bulbul mentioned that these issues were addressed through quasi-judicial hearings on September 24 and 25 before the scheduled election on October 6.

Bulbul contested the legitimacy of the NSC’s investigation, arguing that the council lacked authority to scrutinize the concluded electoral process of an autonomous body like the BCB. He criticized the probe as politically motivated and a breach of cricket board independence principles.

Describing the formation of the ad hoc committee, led by Tamim, as unlawful, Bulbul stated that it contravened the BCB constitution and ICC regulations on government interference. He declared the committee as invalid and emphasized that the BCB does not acknowledge its jurisdiction.

Expressing concerns about the negative impact on Bangladesh cricket’s global reputation, governance, investments, and hosting rights due to such actions, Bulbul highlighted potential uncertainties and urged the ICC to intervene promptly. He also raised worries about the disruption to player development, particularly at the youth level.

Bulbul’s statement followed the NSC’s decision to dissolve the Bulbul-led board earlier in the day, citing irregularities in the 2025 elections. The NSC appointed an 11-member ad hoc committee led by Tamim with a three-month mandate to manage operations and arrange new elections.
