In the early hours of May 27, six newborns tragically passed away at Ad-din Medical College Hospital in Dhaka, just hours after their birth. The hospital attributed the deaths to a severe failure in the post-operative ward, placing blame on two lower-level staff members.
While infant mortality in Bangladesh has decreased significantly over the years, the newborn mortality rate has slightly increased, with 26 deaths per 1,000 live births. The majority of infant deaths occur within the first day or week of life due to inadequate care during birth, often due to the lack of skilled healthcare professionals. Only 6 out of 10 deliveries in Bangladesh are attended by skilled health workers, a rate that is one of the lowest globally. Infants born in rural areas or to impoverished families are at a higher risk of not surviving past the age of five.
Despite the efforts of the newborns’ parents to seek medical care at a reputable facility and entrust their babies to professionals, the six infants lost their lives due to negligence at the hospital. Ad-din Medical College Hospital has agreed to provide financial compensation, free medical treatment, educational support, and job opportunities to the families of the victims. However, questions remain regarding public accountability in the face of such a catastrophic event.
An investigation by the Directorate General of Health Services revealed structural and administrative failures at the hospital, including irregularities in air conditioning, poor ventilation, inadequate lighting, lack of medical staff on duty, and delayed interventions leading to the deterioration and death of the newborns. To prevent such tragedies in the future, the hospital’s top management must be held accountable, and safety regulations must be strictly enforced nationwide.
The lack of oversight at Ad-din hospital and the failure to hold those responsible accountable raise concerns about the desensitization to the suffering of children in Bangladesh. Incidents involving vulnerable children, such as cases of abuse, neglect, and preventable deaths, highlight the urgent need for robust enforcement of existing laws and regulations.
Despite legislative protections in place for children in Bangladesh, there is a significant gap between the law and its implementation, leading to repeated failures in safeguarding children’s rights. The promises made by political parties to prioritize child protection and safety must translate into tangible actions to ensure a safer environment for all children in the country.
It is imperative to move beyond rhetoric and take decisive action to protect children from harm. The safety and well-being of children should be paramount, and any negligence or misconduct that jeopardizes their lives must be addressed with unwavering determination. Upholding the basic rights and safety of children is a fundamental obligation that must not be compromised.
