A Dhaka court has granted a five-day remand for Lt Gen (retd) Masud Uddin Chowdhury, a notable figure in the army-backed interim government, in a case involving charges of human trafficking and document forgery at Paltan Model Police Station. The case, initiated on September 3, 2024, by the proprietor of Afia Overseas, includes 103 individuals, among them former minister Imran Ahmed.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaid issued the remand order following a plea by detectives who presented Masud before the court. The arrest of Masud took place earlier today at his residence in Dhaka’s Baridhara DOHS by a detective team.
Previously, Masud held the position of general officer commanding (GOC) of 9 Infantry Division in Savar during the state of emergency declared on January 11, 2007. He later assumed the role of chief coordinator of the National Coordination Committee on Serious Crimes and Corruption, where he was promoted to lieutenant general and assigned to the National Defence College on June 2, 2008. Subsequently, he was transferred to the foreign ministry and appointed to the Bangladesh High Commission in Canberra on June 8, 2008.
