“India’s Great Nicobar Project Gets Environmental Approval”

Date:

India’s environmental court has approved the Great Nicobar infrastructure project, despite concerns about potential harm to the island’s ecology in the Andaman Sea. The National Green Tribunal has rejected several petitions opposing the project on the environmentally fragile Great Nicobar island, stating that sufficient measures have been put in place to protect the environment.

The infrastructure initiative includes the construction of a transshipment port, airport, power plant, and residential area on the island, which is situated near the Strait of Malacca, a key maritime route. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration aims to invest significant funds in integrating the island into global trade networks, following the initial environmental clearances granted in 2022.

Describing it as a project of “strategic, defence, and national significance,” India’s environment minister emphasized the importance of the undertaking.
