Abahani Limited captain Mosaddek Hossain has expressed his team’s determination to defend their Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League (DPL) championship. He also aims to secure a spot back in the national team by delivering standout performances in the upcoming tournament.
Having led Abahani to their 24th DPL title last season, Mosaddek is confident in their abilities as they gear up for the 12-team league commencing on May 4 at six different venues. The team has maintained a well-rounded squad by combining seasoned players with young talent, including key figures like Najmul Hossain Shanto, Jishan Alam, S M Mehrab Hasan, Rakibul Hasan, and Mahfuzur Rahman Rabby from their victorious campaign.
During the recent player transfer window on April 18–19, Abahani bolstered their roster with significant additions such as Soumya Sarkar, Khaled Ahmed, Sabbir Rahman, Jaker Ali, Maruf Mridha, Anik Sarkar, Rohanat Doullah Borson, Sabbir Hosan, Mahidul Islam Ankon, and Iqbal Hossain Emon.
Mosaddek emphasized the team’s primary objective of performing well and achieving favorable outcomes during a media interaction in Mirpur. He highlighted the ambitious nature of clubs like Abahani and Mohammedan, who are perennial contenders for the title.
The all-rounder acknowledged the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) emphasis on the league as a pathway for players to earn national team call-ups based on their performances. Mosaddek, who excelled with 487 runs and 30 wickets last season, sees this as a personal opportunity for advancement.
Looking ahead, Mosaddek hinted at continuing to bat in the middle order, ideally around the five or six positions, aligning with the national team’s current requirements. He noted that the absence of the Super League phase this season will intensify the competition, making it a challenging campaign for all teams involved.
In addition to Abahani, other contenders like Mohammedan Sporting Club, Prime Bank Cricket Club, and Legends of Rupganj have also assembled strong lineups on paper for the upcoming tournament. Teams have commenced their training sessions in preparation for the competitive season ahead.
