Political considerations take precedence over legal aspects in the execution of the July Charter, according to Ali Riaz, the special assistant to the chief adviser.
During a recent press briefing, Riaz emphasized the paramount importance of political considerations over legal considerations in the realm of politics. He highlighted that the public has shown support for political parties and their decisions, indicating the need for alignment between political and public interests, a responsibility that falls on politicians.
Responding to queries about the legal obligations of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which is poised to assume governmental duties, Riaz underscored that the referendum reflects the will of the people, making it a moral and political obligation for all political entities, including the BNP, to uphold the reforms.
Riaz stressed the significance of political realities over mere legal statutes, emphasizing that the referendum results, which directly represent the people’s endorsement, should guide the direction of constitutional reforms. He expressed hope that the BNP, as a representative of public sentiment, would honor the referendum outcomes in its governance and constitutional reform efforts.
Notably, the referendum results have transitioned from being solely the government’s agenda to becoming the shared agenda of the state and all political parties. Riaz underscored the need for prioritizing the formation of an upper house of parliament within six months, in line with the established procedural order.
Emphasizing the public’s decisive role in endorsing major constitutional changes through the referendum, Riaz called for unified efforts among ruling and opposition parties, both inside and outside parliament, to carry out the people’s mandate. He urged for collaborative dialogue to ensure the effective implementation of the reforms.
Regarding his future role, when questioned, Riaz expressed his desire to promptly resume his professional endeavors.
