BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has emphasized the importance of national unity in Bangladesh, stating that any form of division would only serve to weaken the country during a crucial period post the parliamentary election. Addressing the press at a city hotel following his party’s significant victory, Tarique stressed the need for unity despite differing paths and opinions, highlighting that national cohesion is a source of strength while division is a vulnerability.
He urged political forces to maintain solidarity to prevent the resurgence of autocracy and the transformation of Bangladesh into a subservient state. Tarique acknowledged that electoral competition may have led to misunderstandings but urged against escalating disputes into acts of revenge or retaliation.
Emphasizing justice as a cornerstone of his prospective government, Tarique called for collaboration from all political entities in fostering a secure and compassionate Bangladesh. He underscored the pivotal role of upholding peace and order, emphasizing the necessity of normalcy in law enforcement and a zero-tolerance policy towards violence and provocative actions.
Highlighting the challenges ahead, Tarique noted the fragile economic situation and the need for revitalizing constitutional institutions and law enforcement agencies left in disarray by the previous regime. His party’s Secretary General, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, introduced Tarique as the “Prime Minister-in-waiting” during the event.
Tarique extended his congratulations to all candidates, emphasizing the significance of political parties in upholding democracy. He expressed optimism that responsible roles played by both the government and opposition would pave the way for institutionalized democracy in the country.
During the press conference, Tarique responded to queries from journalists, asserting that their successful electoral strategy was based on garnering popular support through transparent means. He highlighted the importance of creating a conducive environment and the necessity of hard work to achieve positive outcomes.
Regarding reconciliation with opposing factions, Tarique emphasized the need for upholding the rule of law. He also addressed foreign policy objectives, emphasizing the prioritization of national interests in diplomatic relations with countries like India and China.
Looking ahead, Tarique outlined the immediate priorities of his government, including economic revival, law enforcement, and depoliticizing institutions. He affirmed a commitment to governance that promotes inclusivity and meritocracy in business and trade sectors.
