Minister Fakhrul Stresses Importance of 1971 Liberation War

Date:

Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir emphasized the significance of the 1971 Liberation War as a fundamental part of the nation’s identity and pride during a recent statement. He expressed disappointment towards politicians who undermine the importance of the Liberation War, asserting that it is a core aspect of the nation’s heritage and existence.

Fakhrul, who also serves as the BNP secretary general, highlighted that the Liberation War commenced in Teliapara, Habiganj, under the leadership of late president Ziaur Rahman and Colonel Ataul Gani Osmani. He recounted the historical events leading up to the declaration of independence on March 25, 1971, following Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s capture by Pakistani forces, emphasizing the role of President Ziaur Rahman in initiating the liberation movement.

Acknowledging Khaleda Zia as the first female freedom fighter in the country, Fakhrul mentioned her pivotal role during the tumultuous period, where she advised army members not to surrender their arms. He criticized the Awami League for overlooking Colonel Osmani’s contributions to the Liberation War and stressed the importance of accurately representing historical facts.

Fakhrul reflected on the July uprising and the resilience of the Bangladeshi people against injustice, citing significant historical events leading to the departure of Hasina in 2024. He denounced false claims suggesting BNP’s reluctance to acknowledge the July uprising, stating that such misinformation is unacceptable.

The minister also highlighted the reform initiatives undertaken by BNP leaders, noting Ziaur Rahman’s introduction of multi-party democracy and Khaleda Zia’s establishment of the caretaker government system. Fakhrul emphasized the party’s commitment to implementing reforms, referencing a 31-point program announced by Tarique Rahman in 2022.

The event, attended by Liberation War Affairs Minister Advocate Ahmed Azam Khan, State Minister Ishraque Hossain, Parliament Whip Alhaj GK Gaus, and MPs Sakhawat Hasan Jibon and Syed Md Faisal, among others, was presided over by Habiganj District Freedom Fighter Unit Command convener Golam Mostafa Rafiq and moderated by member secretary Humayun Kabir.
