Paramount Skydance has revealed intentions to merge Paramount+ and HBO Max into a single streaming service after the completion of the merger between Paramount Global and Warner Bros Discovery (WBD).
During an investor call discussing the merger, Paramount CEO David Ellison mentioned that the unified platform would unite over 200 million direct-to-consumer subscribers, bolstering the company’s ability to compete in the streaming industry.
Ellison highlighted Paramount’s efforts to streamline its existing streaming services under a unified technological framework, with plans to replicate this strategy for the merged platform. The combined service, supported by a vast content library and advanced technology, is set to position the company as a formidable contender among global streaming giants.
Although specific details regarding the new service’s structure are still unclear, HBO Max is expected to function as a standalone section within the platform or be fully integrated. Ellison stressed that the HBO brand will maintain its operational independence.
He commended HBO’s leadership, led by Casey Bloys, suggesting that the brand would continue to operate independently to safeguard its creative essence. Paramount’s leadership values HBO’s reputation and content quality, intending to grant it operational autonomy without extensive corporate intervention.
The merger stemmed from a competitive bidding process, with Netflix initially securing a deal for Warner Bros Discovery’s studio and streaming divisions. However, Paramount revised its offer to encompass the entire WBD enterprise, including its cable assets. Following an enhanced bid, WBD’s board accepted Paramount’s proposal, paving the way for the merger announcement.
The consolidated entity aims to establish a stronger competitor in the streaming realm while upholding HBO’s unique identity within the new organizational framework.
