Warner Bros is said to be in the process of creating a new movie within the “Game of Thrones” universe, focusing on the renowned conquest of Westeros by Aegon I Targaryen.
According to sources, the studio has brought on board writer Beau Willimon, recognized for his contributions to “Andor” and “House of Cards”, to craft the screenplay. The project is set to be a grand feature film and will serve as the first big-screen adaptation of “A Song of Ice and Fire”, the book series by George R. R. Martin that inspired the popular HBO franchise.
The film will center around Aegon I Targaryen’s efforts to unify the divided kingdoms of Westeros. In the lore of the series, Aegon and his sister-wives utilized three dragons to conquer opposing rulers, significantly changing the power dynamics across the continent.
The backstory and lineage of the Targaryen dynasty are detailed in Martin’s book “Fire and Blood”. Parts of this material were previously used as the foundation for the HBO show “House of the Dragon”, which delves into the Targaryen civil conflict referred to as the “Dance of the Dragons”.
The proposed movie is set approximately 300 years prior to the events of “Game of Thrones” and roughly 120 years before “House of the Dragon”. Specifics regarding casting, production schedule, and release date have not yet been disclosed.
There have been previous discussions about a “Game of Thrones” movie. In 2013, the original show creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss had suggested wrapping up the series with a trilogy of films, but HBO opted to conclude the story on television.
The franchise’s on-screen presence continues to expand. “House of the Dragon” is anticipated to come back for a third season this summer, and another spinoff, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”, is progressing with additional seasons. Rumors have also hinted at an animated project focusing on the character known as the Sea Snake.
