“Opposition Leader Warns of Banking Sector Interference”

Date:

The leader of the Opposition and Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami, Shafiqur Rahman, expressed strong disapproval regarding the decision to place the managing director of Islami Bank on compulsory leave. He claimed that recent events at Bangladesh Bank signaled a new phase of control at the nation’s largest bank.

During a seminar in Dhaka titled “Government against the referendum verdict: The country facing a crisis,” organized by the Jamaat-led 11-party alliance, Shafiqur Rahman warned against the repercussions of continued interference in the banking sector. He emphasized that any threat to a bank responsible for 32 percent of the country’s remittances could have severe economic consequences.

Pointing out the risks of politicization, Shafiqur Rahman highlighted the potential public backlash that could arise from ongoing interventions in the banking system. He also criticized what he described as a resurgence of authoritarian tendencies in the Jatiya Sangsad, urging lawmakers to exhibit decorum in their discourse.

The Ameer cautioned against intimidation tactics, noting that the current generation, influenced by past movements, would not succumb to such pressures. He called upon the government to respect the will of the majority, honor martyrs, and fulfill the aspirations of past movements rather than seeking personal gains or consolidating power.

Shafiqur Rahman reiterated the movement’s commitment to breaking the cycle of dynastic politics and ensuring a democratic system that serves the interests of the people. He also criticized the excessive time spent on mutual praise in parliamentary proceedings, suggesting a more focused approach to legislative discussions.

Opposition Chief Whip and National Citizen Party Convener Nahid Islam, speaking at the same event, highlighted the resurgence of issues from the past 16 years and criticized the BNP for leading the country into its current crisis, holding them accountable for the outcomes.
