Lionel Messi faced a potential injury setback just before the World Cup as he left Inter Miami’s MLS game against Philadelphia Union prematurely. The Argentine star was substituted in the 73rd minute at a rainy Nu Stadium in Miami after experiencing discomfort in his left leg.
Following his substitution, Messi walked off the field without any visible signs of distress. Inter Miami coach Guillermo Hoyos mentioned that it was too early to confirm if Messi had sustained an injury, attributing the substitution to precautious measures due to the field conditions.
Hoyos stated, “We are yet to receive a medical report on his condition, but it seems to be fatigue. The heavy pitch played a role, and it’s always better to err on the side of caution in such situations.”
Since joining Inter Miami in 2023, Messi has been cautious about managing his playing time, often being rested during busy fixture schedules. His history of hamstring issues, which affected his preseason earlier this year, has raised concerns about his fitness.
An extended absence for Messi could severely impact Argentina’s chances of retaining their World Cup title in the upcoming tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The World Cup commences on June 11 in Mexico City, with Argentina scheduled to face Algeria in Kansas City five days later.
The game against Philadelphia Union was Inter Miami’s final match before the MLS break for the World Cup. While Messi has not officially confirmed his participation in the tournament, it is widely expected that he will make his sixth World Cup appearance, equalling a record.
Argentina is set to announce its squad next week before traveling to the United States for pre-World Cup friendlies against Honduras in Texas on June 6 and Iceland on June 9.
