“US Pursues Second Round of Peace Talks with Iran in Pakistan”

Date:

The United States is in talks for a potential second round of peace negotiations with Iran in Pakistan and expresses confidence in reaching an agreement, according to US officials. Tehran has issued a threat to disrupt Red Sea trade unless the US lifts its naval blockade of Iranian ports.

A Pakistani delegation has arrived in Tehran with a fresh communication from Washington after President Donald Trump hinted at resuming discussions following the recent unsuccessful meetings in Islamabad.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt informed the press that further discussions are likely to take place in the Pakistani capital. Vice President JD Vance, who led the initial talks, disclosed that Iran is being presented with a comprehensive proposal to end the ongoing conflict with Israel and the US while addressing the long-standing nuclear dispute with Tehran.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized that Israel and the US share common objectives, including the removal of enriched material from Iran, cessation of enrichment activities, and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The strategic waterway, crucial for global oil transportation, has been affected by Iranian actions since the initiation of the US-Israeli campaign and is now the focal point of the American blockade.

IMF Chief Kristalina Georgieva cautioned about potential economic challenges if the Middle East conflict persists and oil prices remain elevated, leading to inflation risks impacting food prices. Despite these concerns, optimism surrounding a resolution to the US-Iran conflict boosted stock prices on Wall Street, with major indices setting new records while crude oil prices decreased.

Washington has intensified pressure on Tehran by imposing a blockade on its ports, with US Central Command claiming to have successfully halted maritime trade to and from Iran. Recent maritime tracking data in the Strait of Hormuz has shown mixed results, with reports of continued shipping activities from southern Iran.

Iran’s military central command center has warned that failure to lift the blockade would violate the ceasefire agreement reached on April 8, potentially leading to a disruption of trade in key waterways including the Persian Gulf, the Sea of Oman, and the Red Sea. Iranian officials have also indicated readiness to defend against any attempts to police the vital shipping routes, threatening to sink American vessels in the Strait of Hormuz if necessary.

In Tehran, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi welcomed a Pakistani delegation led by army chief Asim Munir to discuss a potential second round of talks and relay a new message from the US.

President Trump has emphasized the necessity of a deal with Iran that permanently prohibits the country from acquiring nuclear weapons. The conflict was triggered by allegations of Iran pursuing nuclear weapons, a claim not substantiated by the UN nuclear watchdog. Negotiations have reportedly revolved around suspending Iran’s uranium enrichment program for varying durations, with Tehran asserting its right to enrich uranium for civilian purposes while highlighting the negotiable aspects of enrichment levels.

In parallel developments, Israel and Lebanon have agreed to engage in direct negotiations following a high-level meeting in Washington, aiming for the dismantling of Hezbollah and the establishment of a sustainable peace through strength. The US administration is actively promoting an end to the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon to facilitate a broader resolution.

Despite diplomatic efforts, tensions remain high as Hezbollah militants launched rockets at Israel, prompting Israeli retaliatory strikes on multiple targets associated with the group in Lebanon.
