Emerging as a standout player in recent times, Sobhana Mostary has proven her consistency in both white-ball formats for the women’s team, overcoming initial challenges and criticisms. The 24-year-old is now focused on extending her impressive form into the upcoming T20 World Cup. In an exclusive interview with Samsul Arefin Khan from The Daily Star, she shared insights on the team’s readiness, her personal growth, and Bangladesh’s aspirations for the tournament. Here are the key excerpts from the conversation:
The Daily Star (DS): As you prepare for the T20 World Cup, facing teams you are somewhat familiar with, how has the overall preparation been for the squad?
Sobhana Mostary (SM): The prospect of playing in England for the first time adds a special thrill to our preparation. We anticipate different conditions in terms of weather and pitches. Our recent practice matches on similar wickets have been beneficial. The upcoming tri-nation series in Scotland will serve as valuable acclimatization.
DS: Reflecting on the challenges faced in close matches during the last 50-over World Cup, do you believe the current preparation is adequate to rectify past shortcomings?
SM: While we had preparations in place previously, the lack of match practice was evident. This time, our matches against Sri Lanka and the tri-series location near England offer excellent readiness. Competing against the Netherlands and Scotland in their home conditions presents a great opportunity for us to refine our skills.
DS: How do you perceive your own evolution as a batswoman and the responsibility of performing consistently for the team?
SM: Understanding the significance of my role within the team came to me relatively late. Amidst a roster of senior players previously, I didn’t feel the same level of responsibility, leading to casual dismissals. Positional changes from opening to the middle order caused some instability. Had I been assigned a fixed position earlier, success might have arrived sooner.
DS: Was there a pivotal moment when your self-perception shifted?
SM: Being omitted from the team during the last Asia Cup T20 in Sri Lanka marked a critical turning point for me. It highlighted areas for improvement. Another significant moment was during the T20 World Cup in the UAE, where I faced challenges and controversies. Notably, my performance in the initial matches helped me regain confidence and secure a spot among the top run-scorers.
DS: What are the team’s strengths and weaknesses from your perspective?
SM: Our batting prowess is a double-edged sword – it can be a strength if we post competitive totals, easing pressure on the bowlers. However, our pace bowling remains a work in progress, with spinners being pivotal. Chasing has been a weak point, evident in recent matches against Sri Lanka. Success hinges on our ability to handle pressure situations while batting.
DS: How is the team addressing issues related to collapses in batting and chasing situations?
SM: Addressing batting collapses is a top priority. We engage in detailed discussions on player roles and scenarios, emphasizing specific game phases like the 11th to 17th overs. Recent training sessions have focused on enhancing our adaptability in these critical moments.
DS: What are the collective and individual targets set for the upcoming World Cup?
SM: The team aims to secure victories in three matches. Past successes against formidable opponents like the Netherlands, Pakistan, and South Africa instill confidence. Maintaining a winning mindset regardless of the opposition’s ranking is crucial for our campaign.
DS: With Eid celebrations coinciding with your time in Scotland, how does celebrating with the team compare to being with your family?
SM: Eid festivities within the team foster a sense of unity and support. We engage in special programs, wear new attire, and might even schedule a practice session on Eid day. Post-practice, we plan to celebrate with unique cuisines and gifts, creating a memorable experience.
DS: How does your family respond to your absence during Eid?
SM: My mother primarily focuses on my performance and well-being while I am away. Given my frequent travels, she has grown accustomed to my absence during such occasions.
