A sports comedy-drama starring Aamir Khan is finally making its way to streaming platforms nearly a year after its theatrical release. The movie, titled “Sitaare Zameen Par”, initially hit cinemas in June 2025 and was later offered on Khan’s YouTube channel through a pay-per-view model, allowing viewers to watch it for approximately Rs 100 per view. The upcoming premiere on SonyLIV is a significant milestone for the platform, as it will mark the first time a Hindi theatrical film debuts there.
Directed by R S Prasanna, the film is the official Hindi adaptation of the Spanish movie “Champions”. In this version, Khan plays the character Gulshan Arora, an assistant coach for a professional basketball team whose life takes a drastic turn after losing his job and getting involved in a drunk-driving incident. The legal repercussions lead to a transformative journey that alters his outlook on life.
Aamir Khan had previously mentioned his rationale for independently releasing the film on YouTube, citing a desire to explore a novel distribution strategy that could enhance accessibility for audiences. He likened the concept to a personalized cinema experience, with Aamir Khan Productions creating a virtual cinema accessible to all through digital platforms. Khan expressed a preference for earning directly from viewers rather than opting for traditional upfront deals with OTT platforms.
The movie also stars Genelia Deshmukh, Ashish Pendse, Aroush Datta, Aayush Bhansali, Rishi Shahani, Gopikrishnan K Varma, Rishabh Jain, Vedant Sharma, Simran Mangeshkar, Samvit Desai, and Naman Misra.
After its successful theatrical run nationwide, “Sitaare Zameen Par” emerged as a significant box office hit, reportedly grossing over Rs 250 crore.
