“Interim Government Led by Prof Yunus Ends, Tarique Rahman Appointed PM”

Date:

The government led by Prof Muhammad Yunus on an interim basis has officially ended as per a notification released by the Cabinet Division. This marks the conclusion of the Advisory Council’s governance during the transitional phase.

Today’s notification announced the appointment of Tarique Rahman as the prime minister by the president, citing his status as an MP with the majority’s confidence in parliament. It also approved the establishment of a new government under his leadership.

The notification stated, “Upon the formation of the new government, the Advisory Council of the current interim government ceases to exist.” This notification formalizes the transfer of executive power following the establishment of the new cabinet under the prime minister.

An anonymous senior official from the Cabinet Division, speaking to The Daily Star, explained that such notifications are a standard part of the constitutional process. The official mentioned, “Typically, the previous government dissolves once the new cabinet is sworn in. However, a separate gazette notification is necessary to officially document the dissolution. We have fulfilled that obligation.”
