West Asia is on the verge of a significant geopolitical shift with the recent signing of the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement on August 7 by Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Pakistan. This agreement stipulates that an armed attack against one signatory will be considered an attack against all three, marking a shift towards greater regional security independence rather than relying solely on the US. While the pact’s specific terms remain unclear, it is too early to predict a complete overhaul of the regional order.
Described by Saudi Political Scientist Nawaf Obaid as the start of a “post-American Middle East,” this transformation does not signal the disappearance of US influence in the region. The US will continue to hold significant military capabilities, technology, investments, diplomatic ties, and political sway. However, there is a subtle shift where Washington may no longer be the sole guarantor of regional security, a change with implications for Bangladesh.
Bangladesh often views developments in West Asia through the lens of Palestine, power struggles, or ideological ties. Yet, the region is also a crucial economic hub for Bangladesh, impacting areas such as remittances, job opportunities, energy prices, shipping expenses, and inflation.
Migration plays a pivotal role, with Bangladeshi workers heavily concentrated in Gulf countries, underscoring the importance of regional stability. The remittance inflows from these workers, as reported by the Bangladesh Bank, highlight the significant link between Bangladesh’s economic well-being and its overseas workforce. The Gulf’s instability can swiftly translate into household income challenges for Bangladesh. Energy security is another concern, as disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and tensions surrounding Iran can disrupt global oil and LNG markets, affecting Bangladesh’s energy-dependent economy.
In response, Bangladesh should prioritize strategic diversification, enhancing ties with Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Gulf nations while maintaining relationships with the US and other key partners. This diplomatic flexibility is crucial in navigating the evolving international landscape and avoiding alignment with specific blocs.
Furthermore, Bangladesh should shift its Gulf diplomacy from labor-centric to broader economic engagement, focusing on skilled employment, technology partnerships, and investment collaborations to reduce reliance on low-skilled labor markets. Additionally, the country must expedite efforts to enhance energy resilience through renewable energy adoption, diversified energy sourcing, improved storage facilities, and regional electricity cooperation to bolster national security.
It is essential for Bangladesh to refrain from interpreting the changing West Asian dynamics through sectarian lenses. Regional stability hinges on cooperation among various actors, including Saudi Arabia, Iran, Türkiye, and Gulf states. Bangladesh’s strength lies in fostering dialogue, promoting economic security, safeguarding migrant welfare, and engaging in multilateral diplomacy without getting entangled in regional rivalries.
While the emergence of a post-American West Asia may not be as dramatic as anticipated, a shift towards a post-unipolar landscape seems more likely. This scenario envisions regional states wielding greater influence and multiple power centers coexisting, presenting both challenges and opportunities for Bangladesh in navigating the evolving regional dynamics.
