Government Vows to Improve Access to Gulf Labor Markets

Date:

The State Minister overseeing the welfare of expatriates and overseas employment, Nurul Haque Nur, has affirmed the government’s commitment to reestablishing access to Middle Eastern labor markets that have seen restrictions in recent times.

Addressing reporters at the secretariat, Nur stated that the prime minister had been briefed on the issue to prioritize the reestablishment of connections with key labor destinations in the Gulf region. He acknowledged the decline in market access since previous administrations and expressed determination to take necessary actions to reverse this trend.

Emphasizing the vital role of remittances in supporting the national economy, the state minister highlighted the significance of expanding opportunities for overseas employment.

During his visit to the ministry offices after assuming his new role formally, Nur outlined his immediate focus on reducing the exorbitant costs associated with overseas migration and combating fraudulent practices affecting migrant workers.

Describing the challenges within the expatriate welfare and labor sectors as intricate, Nur underscored the need to address issues such as delayed salary payments during festive periods, insufficient welfare officers at foreign missions, and the escalating expenses related to migration.

Recognizing the economic importance of remittances, Nur stressed the obligation to safeguard the interests of expatriate workers as a crucial element for Bangladesh’s well-being.

Given his background in rights-based advocacy, Nur expressed a deep sense of responsibility in his new role and highlighted the significance of being actively engaged in policy-making for the betterment of expatriate workers.

Acknowledging the early stages of their work under the new leadership, Nur urged patience from stakeholders, assuring them that the ministry was dedicated to understanding and addressing the complexities of the sectors effectively. He appealed for support and cooperation as they embarked on their mission to enhance the welfare of overseas workers.
