Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister, Dr Khalilur Rahman, emphasized the country’s commitment to a strong and accountable foreign policy that upholds national interests and fosters positive relationships with all nations. Speaking after a meeting with Nepalese Foreign Minister Bala Nanda Sharma, Dr Rahman highlighted that the core principle guiding Bangladesh’s foreign affairs is ‘Bangladesh First’, ensuring the protection of national interests.
He outlined that the current government’s foreign policy under the BNP administration will prioritize sovereign equality, mutual respect, non-interference in internal affairs, national dignity, and mutual benefit. Dr Rahman, who previously served as National Security Adviser, noted that these principles were also central to the previous government’s efforts to rebalance Bangladesh’s foreign policy.
The Foreign Minister reiterated that the government will rigorously evaluate national interests in all foreign engagements, emphasizing that this remains a non-negotiable aspect. He expressed the government’s intention to align with the foreign policy approach of late President Ziaur Rahman, highlighting Bangladesh’s historical achievements such as securing a seat on the UN Security Council and playing a pivotal role in establishing SAARC during Rahman’s tenure.
Addressing concerns about strained relations with India following recent events, Dr Rahman stressed Bangladesh’s commitment to fostering positive relations with all countries while safeguarding its own interests. He underscored a growing focus on the Rohingya crisis and mentioned ongoing efforts to engage with relevant parties, including the Arakan Army and the Myanmar government, to expedite a resolution.
Regarding questions about potential conflicts of interest due to his previous role as National Security Adviser during the election period, Dr Rahman dismissed allegations of irregularities and expressed willingness to review any concerns about vote counting if necessary. Responding to past demands by the BNP for his removal as NSA, he acknowledged evolving perceptions over time.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed acknowledged the challenges and opportunities in her new role, emphasizing the government’s commitment to safeguarding national interests while fostering positive diplomatic ties worldwide. She reiterated that the foreign policy agenda will reflect the aspirations of the Bangladeshi people.
During the bilateral meeting with Nepal, both countries reaffirmed their dedication to enhancing cooperation at various levels. The foreign ministers discussed bolstering ties in trade, energy, connectivity, and tourism, building on the longstanding relationship characterized by good neighborliness and shared goals.
