Just on the brink of Mexico’s World Cup kickoff, a massive crowd flooded the main street of the capital on Saturday with hopes of creating the biggest human wave ever seen.
The tradition of the human wave originated in Mexican soccer stadiums during the 1986 World Cup to support the national team and has since become a global sensation.
Early on Saturday, locals showed their support by sporting national football jerseys, waving flags, and engaging in lively celebrations with music and stretching exercises.
Standing at the forefront of a crowd stretching over two kilometers along the famous Paseo de la Reforma, Sally Aviles exuded optimism about setting a new record.
“I believe we will achieve it. The turnout is impressive, and we are capable of breaking the record!” stated the 31-year-old content creator.
Women adorned in elegant attire and skeleton masks resembling “catrinas,” symbolic of Mexico’s Day of the Dead, joined the enthusiastic crowd.
The La Sonora Santanera orchestra provided tropical tunes while a host directed the synchronized movements of the massive gathering.
Following instructions, the front row raised their arms, knelt, and swiftly rose up, prompting a ripple effect throughout the crowd resembling undulating waves.
“I couldn’t miss this incredible event, showcasing Mexico’s true essence — the vibrant atmosphere, love, unity, and peace,” expressed Gloria Fragoso, 55, sporting a traditional headdress.
Fragoso emphasized Mexico’s readiness to welcome World Cup fans, as the tournament is jointly hosted with Canada and the United States.
Despite long-standing gang violence issues, authorities have pledged heightened security measures for the matches in Mexico City, Monterrey, and Guadalajara.
Social media updates from cultural authorities later confirmed that the largest human wave record had been surpassed, awaiting validation from Guinness World Records.
