The United Nations’ migration agency has warned that the lives of over 1.9 million displaced individuals in South Sudan are in jeopardy due to shortages in aid funding. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) highlighted the critical situation, emphasizing that the humanitarian needs in one of the world’s most displacement-affected nations far exceed the available resources.
According to the IOM, South Sudan, which became an independent country in 2011, has been plagued by civil unrest, poverty, and widespread corruption. The country is currently facing challenges from both new arrivals escaping conflicts in neighboring Sudan and internal displacement resulting from years of turmoil, floods, and instability.
Since the outbreak of war in Sudan in April 2023, more than 1.3 million individuals have sought refuge in South Sudan, with the majority being returning South Sudanese nationals. This influx has placed significant strain on border communities, as well as the country’s already stretched services and delicate infrastructure, as noted by the IOM.
