New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani met with US President Donald Trump at the White House to discuss housing and student detentions by federal immigration authorities. This marked their second meeting following Mamdani’s election win. The Mayor, a Democrat, shared on social media a photo of the productive meeting, expressing his anticipation for more housing development in NYC.
During the meeting, Mamdani addressed the recent detention of Columbia University student Elmina Aghayeva by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, prompting Trump to assure her imminent release. The Department of Homeland Security subsequently confirmed her release and initiated removal proceedings.
Despite their differing political views, Trump and Mamdani have found common ground in advocating for affordable housing. Trump, a former real estate developer, has supported Mamdani’s push for increased housing in NYC. Affordable housing has been a key issue for both politicians, especially as housing prices have surged in recent years, impacting the cost of living.
Trump has reiterated his commitment to addressing housing affordability in his recent State of the Union speech. However, challenges persist, with high mortgage rates and a shortage of housing supply across the US, making homeownership increasingly unattainable for many families.
