England coach Brendon McCullum has brushed off rumors of a rift with Test captain Ben Stokes, finding amusement in suggestions that their relationship had deteriorated. Stokes is slated to make a comeback in the upcoming third Test against New Zealand, joined by fast bowler Gus Atkinson after a disciplinary hearing. Both players had been suspended from the second Test due to a breach of curfew at a London nightclub, and were said to be present during an incident involving a member of England’s security team and a Saracens rugby player following England’s first-Test victory.
During Stokes’ absence, England faced a 253-run defeat at The Oval, resulting in a series tie with New Zealand. McCullum, who had previously faced inquiries about his rapport with Stokes following a 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia, addressed the speculation on Tuesday, asserting that there was no truth to the rumors. McCullum shared with reporters that he had reassured Stokes of their good friendship, emphasizing their shared commitment to the well-being of English cricket.
Having collaborated closely with Stokes since assuming the Test captaincy in 2022, McCullum highlighted their partnership’s positive impact on England’s red-ball cricket strategy. He expressed confidence that recent setbacks would not impede the team’s progress, reflecting on their strong bond and shared goals for English cricket. Looking ahead to the third Test at Trent Bridge, England aims to secure a series victory, with their last Test series win occurring against New Zealand 18 months ago in 2024.
