Ukrainian missiles have targeted the Russian town of Belgorod near the border, causing significant damage to energy facilities and disrupting essential services such as power, water, and heating, according to the regional governor’s statement released early yesterday.
The recent attack on Belgorod, located 40 km (25 miles) from the Ukrainian border, and its adjacent area marked the second strike within a five-day period resulting in substantial destruction.
This particular region has been a frequent focus of Ukraine’s military operations ever since Russia invaded its neighboring country four years ago. Vyacheslav Gladkov, in a message on Telegram, reported, “Serious damage has been inflicted on the energy infrastructure, leading to disruptions in the supply of power, water, and heating.”
Approximately 50,000 residents were left without electricity following the assault, with no official response from Ukrainian authorities as of yet.
Governor Gladkov mentioned that the full extent of the destruction would be evaluated at daybreak. Images circulated on unofficial Telegram channels depicted residential areas plunged into darkness with the sky illuminated by explosions.
Belgorod, alongside the neighboring Kursk region, parts of which were unexpectedly captured by Ukraine in August 2024 and held for an extended period, has experienced repeated cross-border attacks since the onset of the conflict.
The incessant shelling and power outages have rendered the war an unavoidable and daily reality for the residents, contrasting with the broader sentiment in Russia where many individuals, according to surveys, attempt to go about their daily lives while dismissing news from the war zone.
