A powerful magnitude-6.0 earthquake shook the central Philippine island of Samar at 2:09pm today, as reported by the United States Geological Survey. The quake originated at a depth of 73.3 kilometers (45 miles) and struck approximately nine kilometers from the coastal town of San Julian in the province.
According to a local police officer interviewed by AFP, the earthquake was described as sudden and forceful. Despite the strong tremors, there have been no immediate injury reports. The officer mentioned witnessing structural damage at the police station, where a roof beam was broken, and furniture was seen moving. As a precaution against potential aftershocks, he and his colleagues evacuated outside.
The Philippines experiences frequent seismic events due to its location on the Pacific “ring of fire,” known for high levels of tectonic activity spanning from Japan, through Southeast Asia, and across the Pacific region. In October, Eastern Mindanao faced devastating earthquakes measuring 7.4 and 6.7 magnitudes, resulting in the loss of at least eight lives. Prior to these recent tremors, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck Cebu province in central Philippines, claiming the lives of 76 individuals and causing substantial destruction to 72,000 homes, as per government reports.
