Amazon will be implementing a new fuel surcharge for sellers utilizing its logistics services due to the impact of increasing oil prices amid the Iran conflict affecting global energy markets. The company announced a 3.5 percent surcharge labeled as “fuel and logistics” for merchants utilizing its shipping services, based on a recent Bloomberg report. This adjustment is anticipated to impact a significant number of third-party sellers in the US and Canada who rely on Amazon’s infrastructure for storing, packaging, and delivering their products.
The surcharge, scheduled to become effective on April 17, will be applicable to merchants utilizing Fulfilment by Amazon, a service that enables sellers to store their inventory in Amazon warehouses for efficient distribution to customers. While Amazon has not disclosed the exact number of sellers enrolled in this program, it is noted that the majority of third-party transactions on the platform are facilitated through it.
This move by Amazon echoes a similar surcharge implemented in 2022 when global oil prices surged beyond $100 per barrel in the aftermath of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
